Verona and horses - a cultural, historic and economic identity boasting very ancient origins. It would be difficult, if not impossible, to imagine this city without its horses, the symbol of its essence and internationality

Fieracavalli, history going back more than a century

Verona has always been a landmark for horse breeding and sales of associated products. The first important historical moment in this part of Italy came in 1772, when Bibbiena designed and supervised the construction of the first trade fair for horses, mules, donkeys and hinnies. For more than 100 years, equestrian competitions were held together a market for the best horsesup to the decisive moment in 1898.

The modern history of the Verona trade fair began in that year: the first edition of the Horse and Agriculture Fair.

Starting off as a simple horse market, the event has seen exponential development over the years. It earned the status of International Trade Fair in 1950 and came to the fore as a leading event in the world equestrian panorama. In any case, thanks to its geographical location, Verona is at the heart of trading routes linking major European markets and is still today a nerve centre for handling goods and people.

This important annual event has had a far-reaching impact on the local area by encouraging the development of numerous small-medium manufacturing companies, initially set up to support the equestrian world and its varied activities.

The event has always had the fundamental ability to keep the noble and ancient traditionsof horses very much alive, especially since the post-war period, when remarkable economic and agricultural growth meant that horses became less important in human life. Fieracavalli today is a “catalyst of interest” not only for enthusiasts but especially for thousands of mostly young people who identify themselves through horses in a new way of thinking about life that combines sport, music, design, art, solidarity, history, leisure, tourism and adventure.
