The magic of free rein horses and the complicity between people and horses is staged this year at the ARTè Gold Gala by one of the veteran’s of this event: the equestrian artist Alex Giona. With a career defined by his non-conformist and pioneering approach to the world of equestrian art, Alex has become, over the years, one of the symbols of free rein training and the unique, magical relationship between people and horses.
The anniversary edition of the Gold Gala at Fieracavalli saw directorAntonio Giarola decide to stage works by masters of international art such as Chagall,Fattori, Boccioni and Picasso, reinterpreting works with an equestrian theme by now imprinted in the collective memory in a tableau vivant.
And Alex Giona will interpret of one of the works by German expressionist artist, Franz Marc, with a free rein performance with his Spanish horses.
“The idea of putting myself on a par with such a great artist as Marc for this year’s Gala is very exciting. I somewhat consider this as the culmination of a career and a life dedicated to art and horses. I started developing free rein shows in 2000 when I became aware of the Parelli method based on sincere communication and mutual respect between horses and riders,” Alex explains.
“The approach and the relationship I have created with my horses start from a playful routine in which they feel “free and equal”. I often talk and given them compliments, so that they get used to my voice day after day and understand the keywords that correspond to specific actions.”
Alex enjoys a unique relationship with his horses as true life companions and a source of pride: “I always respect their nature. I never force them to do anything. On the contrary, I am very attentive to their physical and psychological well-being. It absolutely must be in good health and able to enjoy themselves because, without them, there would be no show.”
Admiring Alex’s work, one might think that it is magic, but that’s not it.
It is the application of a method which – thanks to the trust and affinity developed between man and animal – spontaneously brings to light, and best expresses the movements and innate charm that horses possess since birth.
“I have performed at Fieracavalli for 18 years and by now I think I have convinced even the most sceptical of the effectiveness of this method, which I have also shared with my daughter Giulia.”
She will accompany him in this new experience at the Gold Gala, with a tribute to artist Chagall staged with his Friesian horses.
“Although she already has some experience – Giulia has been performing for several years in the best horse shows in Germany – she is really excited about being able to perform at the Gold Gala …it’s always great to return home!” Alex concludes.
