Improving the quality of life for people with disabilities through work. This is the goal of the inclusion project launched at Fieracavalli by the cooperative “Apen’Down-Irriverenti Sociali.” At the food service points in halls 7 and 9 of the international equestrian event taking place in Verona, 20 young people with Down syndrome are welcoming visitors and preparing coffee, cocktails, or a quick lunch.
This initiative helps to increase the emotional, relational maturity, and economic independence of the young workers. Being employed on a stable basis allows them to develop skills related to self-awareness and communication, learning to problem-solve, respect rules, contexts, roles, and the schedules that a full-time job requires, while also managing money, which is usually handled solely by the family.
“We are proud of what has been achieved so far and aware that there is still much to do, but the challenges the future holds serve as motivation for us, for the young people, and for the many families joining our initiative. Apen’Down-Irriverenti Sociali believes that work is a right for everyone and that everyone can contribute if given the chance to develop and express their abilities,” commented Silvia Bigagnoli, president of the social cooperative.
At the project’s presentation today at Fieracavalli in Verona, the Minister for Disabilities, Alessandra Locatelli, took part and stated: “With Apen’Down-Irriverenti Sociali, we are adding an essential piece to an inclusion project that, since last year, has shown extraordinary growth, culminating in the establishment of a cooperative. Year after year, Fieracavalli continues to grow, embracing new initiatives, thanks to a shared process with the Veneto Region, which has been able to translate guidelines into concrete actions. Recognizing each person’s talents and abilities, investing in potential rather than limitations, is a key commitment.”
